Product Review: Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Oil Blend For Dogs

We live in a heavily wooded area in Sussex County NJ and the fleas and ticks are horrible this year.  In the past we have used products such as Frontline, and Advantix II, but they always caused our little Luna to be miserable with scratching and rashes within minuets of application.  We were desperate to find a solution that wouldn’t be so harsh on Luna’s skin, but still be as effective against nasty biting parasites.

After some research and product comparison, we came across an all natural, holistic, topical flea and tick remedy called “Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Oil Blend For Dogs“.

Product description from their website:
Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Oil keeps mosquitoes and biting flies off your pet’s vulnerable ears, saving days of scratching and discomfort from itchy bites. It will deter ticks and reduce your risk of picking up those disease carrying hitchhikers on your daily walk or when out for a hike. And of course, this natural repellent works great to protect your dog for a trip to the dog park, doggy day care, training class, etc., to minimize the chances of bringing home fleas, the worst insect enemy of all.”

Listed Ingredients:
Almond Oil, Neem Oil, Essential Oils of: Organic Lemongrass, Citronella, Catnip, Lavender, Rosemary, Clary Sage & Cedar

Our experience:
This product is listed on sale on their website in a 2 oz bottle for $12.79 (before shipping and handling).  We decided for the price, it was worth a shot.  I placed an order, paid $8.99 for shipping, and no tax, making the product just under $22.00, which, in my opinion, is still better than $60-$80 for those big name flea and tick products.  It shipped fast, within 2 days, and came in eco friendly packaging along with a catalog and a discount on our next purchase.  We applied it using the directions on the label the first few times, but found it works best if applied down the spine of the dog, then rubbing a few drops on the belly.  We use about 1/4 the dropper every application.  After the first application, we waited with anticipation, but for the first time since puppy hood, Luna did not scratch after a flea and tick treatment was applied.  She kind of just turned around, sniffed her back, then went about her usual doggy business.  We were so relieved.

Pros:
Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Oil Blend For Dogs comes in a small glass bottle with an easy to use dropper.  It smells great and doesn’t throw our little Luna into a scratching fit once applied.  We’ve found after using this product for a few months that it is just as effective as big name topical flea and tick treatments at a fraction of the cost.

Cons:
The oil needs to be applied regularly even though the direction on the bottle say once a week.  We found it is most effective if applied every three days.  However it’s a small inconvenience for the price of the product.

Bottom line:
Fur-Endly Pet Care highly recommends this product to anyone seeking a natural alternative for flea, tick, and mosquito bite prevention.  It is easy to use, smells great, and a welcome relief for those pets that suffer from skin allergies.  We’ve been using Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Oil Blend For Dogs every 3 days for about two months now and still have more than half the product left in the bottle.

Where to buy:
This product can currently be purchase through Only Natural Pet Store’s Website for $12.79 plus shipping and handling.

Sadly, Herbal Defense Oil didn’t work on my small dog. I applied it daily and according to directions, but the ticks (both deer and wood) loved it. I pulled off two to four ticks each day for a week. This oil, combined with shoo!TAGs and with garlic and brewer’s yeast powder mixed in food, did nothing to keep ticks away. I haven’t seen a flea this year, so either they’re not out yet (5/28/12) or something I’m using is keeping them away. Now I’m tryint Wondercide’s Evolv, and after three days, it either keeps ticks away or kills (smothers) them.

Sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. The fleas and ticks are horrible this year. We find it works best if you put 3-4 drops in the palms of your hands, rub them together, then give your pup a full body message.
